Livraria Lello & Irmão – rua das Carmelitas
Inaugurated in 1906, designed by architect Xavier Esteves, it is considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.
The neo-Gothic style façade, inside we can see several busts, which represent some of the greatest writers of the time in Portugal (Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queiroz, Guerra Junqueiro, etc.), the central staircase is of a unique beauty, considered by some as the first construction in reinforced concrete of the city. Initially known as the Chardron bookshop (and publisher), the Frenchman Ernesto Chardron was, in fact, the previous owner.
Currently considered the most visited building of the city, it is also exponentiated by the fact that the author of the Harry Potter passed through here…and get inspired for writing the first book.
