Miradouro de Santa Catarina – Lordelo do Ouro
Miradouro da capela Santa Catarina e Senhora dos Anjos (1395 – séc. XIV)
Located in one of the highest points of the freguesia of Lordelo do Ouro, it offers a wide view of the estuary of the Douro river, including the Calém Garden up to the sea, built at the end of the 14th century by the families of Portuguese fishermen, would serve as a mark “lighthouse” in the difficult navigation of the mouth of the Douro river.
It is one of the most popular places to see the fireworks that are launched every year on the night of São Pedro on the other side of the river. Recognized to be as good as it is beautiful, Afurada’s fire brings thousands of visitors to the banks of the Douro every year to enjoy it.
Jardim do Cálem is a small garden area that is almost at the mouth of the Douro River and offers magnificent views over the river. In it we can appreciate in its widest area, a monument that recalls the Ceuta expedition of 1415. The garden extends to Passeio Alegre.
On the way to Sobreiras, where there is a bronze sculpture, O Mensageiro, by Irene Vilar – a sculptor born in Matosinhos in 1930 and died in Oporto in 2008, who lived practically her entire life in Foz do Douro.
Some lawns and plantations of trees and bushes, in space conquered from the river, expand the green area.
